BJP leader and state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, amid protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam, said it was impossible to provide evidence of religious persecution under the CAA. He said that it is impossible for a person to go to Bangladesh to show evidence of religious persecution and collect a copy of the police report. Himant said that if a person has to prove religious persecution, he would have to go to Bangladesh and collect a copy of the police report. Why would the police station in Bangladesh provide that evidence? Therefore, it is not possible to prove the concept of religious persecution under the citizenship law. Sarma said this when asked about his recent statement on the CAA on religious persecution.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that religious persecution cannot be a criterion for the CAA. He asked how an applicant can prove that he is a victim of religious persecution or that he has fled from his native country and has come to India due to fear of religious persecution.

For your information, tell us tell you that the Citizenship Act was passed in the Parliament in December last month. Protests are taking place in many parts of the country including Assam. Under this law, there is a provision to give citizenship to religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India due to persecution till 31 December 2014. The people of Assam are demanding from the Central Government to withdraw the CAA.
