It is well known that National Consumer Day is celebrated on 24th December this year, just like every year. The aim is to make consumers aware of their importance, their rights, and responsibilities. The Consumer Protection Act was introduced on this day on December 24, 1986. This was followed by changes in the Act in 1991 and 1993. A comprehensive change was made in December 2002 to make the Consumer Protection Act more functional and useful and has been implemented on March 15, 2003. The act aims to provide effective safeguards against various types of exploitation to consumers, such as bad goods or poor services and unfair trade practices.

Every year this day is celebrated on different themes, this year the day is being celebrated on the alternative consumer dispute redressal theme. The Act has been considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country. The Act empowers consumers to fight for their rights. Under this, the consumer (i) Right to Protection (ii) Right to Information (iii) Right to Choice (iv) Right to Hearing (v) Right to Redressal (vi) Right to Education.

The Government of India has declared 24th December as National Consumer Day, because the President of India adopted the Historic Consumer Protection Act, 1986 act on the same day. On December 20, 2018, last year, the Lok Sabha passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 to amend the Act. The bill includes strict erring sentences, prison terms, and hefty fines for misleading advertising and food adulteration.
