New Delhi: There is also a National Highway in the country where the wheels of the vehicles stop at 9 o'clock in the night. The reason is that the ban takes place on this highway from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Thursday, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi questioned the issue in the Lok Sabha. In a written reply, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the ban on night traffic will remain intact.

The National Highway-212 connecting Kerala and Karnataka has now been transformed into National Highway 766. The highway has a total of 212 km. There were incidents of animal deaths in the night traffic ban on this highway. Night traffic was closed ten years ago after several complaints. Rahul Gandhi had asked that night traffic on NH-212 passing through Bandipur National Park has been banned. Is the Central Government considering any alternative to remove this ban without disturbing the wildlife?

Replying to the Lok Sabha, Nitin Gadkari said that the District Collector, Charmraj Nagar had banned traffic on the National Highway from 9 am to 6 am on 3rd June 2009. That was upheld by the Karnataka High Court on January 9, 2010. Later, Kerala's Transport Department filed a special permission petition challenging the Karnataka High Court's verdict in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had set up an expert committee headed by Secretary Road Transport and Highways, which had decided to uphold the ban.
