Indian Railways has provided free wifi facility at 5500 stations across the country. Railway's digital arm RailTel gave this information on Friday. Mahuamilan station of Jharkhand falling in East Central Railway zone became the 5500th station to be equipped with this facility. Railways are continuously introducing such facilities, which are directly benefiting the common passengers. One of these is the free WiFi facility.

According to media reports, Railways started a free wifi facility at their stations from January 2016. This facility was first given at Mumbai Central Station. In 46 months, RailTel has expanded this service to 5500 stations across the country. Railways say that this service will be extended even further. In fact, in this era of digitization, the Internet has become a necessity of the people. Some people cannot work without it.

In his statement, RailTel CMD Puneet Chawla said, "The aim is to provide wifi facility at all railway stations (except halts)." RailTel has partnered Google, Tata Trust, PGCIL for parts of the project. Funds have also been received from the Department of Telecom USOF for 200 stations. WiFi facility is being made available in the name of Railways. Chawla said that in October 2019, a total of 1.5 crore users logged into Railwire WiFi service at all stations. The number of users is constantly increasing.
