New Delhi: Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Punjab Congress chairman, resigned on Wednesday, a day after Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi requested the resignations of party presidents in five states to allow for the reform of the Pradesh Congress Committees.

"I have given my resignation as requested by the Congress President," Sidhu stated in a tweet as he posted the one-line resignation letter.

Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, asked state party chiefs in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur to quit on Tuesday to allow for the reorganisation of the Pradesh Congress Committees.

The move by the Congress top command came after the Congress Working Committee met on Sunday.  The meeting was conducted in the aftermath of the party's catastrophic defeat in five states' Assembly elections.

The results of five assembly elections came as a shock to the Congress, which had hoped to do well in order to boost its chances in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and fight off a challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress to replace it as the country's anti-BJP fulcrum.
