Patiala: Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former cricketer-turned-politician and Congress leader, is scheduled to be released from Punjab's Patiala Prison today, around 10 months after the Supreme Court sentenced him to one year in prison in a three-decade-old road rage case.

The Supreme Court sentenced Sidhu to one year in prison on May 19 of last year for the 1988 incident of road rage in which Sidhu is accused of beating one Gurnam Singh, who eventually passed away in the hospital.

"Currently, a few formalities are being completed. In an hour, he ought to be released from custody "Sidhu's son Karan waited outside the Patiala jail for his father. Outside the jail, Congress workers could be seen playing dhols to welcome the politician-turned-cricketer.
Brahm Shankar Jimpa, a minister for Punjab, stated on Friday that the Punjabi government has no issues with Sidhu's release.

"The cabinet has given its approval to the release of prisoners whose sentences have been finished. Those who have served their entire term will be let go "said Jimpa.

The Supreme Court stated that it has granted the request for review of Sidhu's sentence "We approved the application for a sentence review. We also sentence respondent Sidhu to a year in prison in addition to the amount that was assessed."

A bench of justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul issued the ruling.

The review petition in the case brought by the victim's family, which sought to broaden the scope of notice in the review petition against Sidhu, had already been reserved by the court.

Kejriwal again raised questions on the educational qualification of PM Modi.
