Even though Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik complained of bad health, a special court in Mumbai extended his judicial custody until April 22.

Malik was brought before Special Judge R N Rokade, who is responsible for hearing cases involving the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The NCP leader entered the witness box and informed the court that he has been ill with kidney problems and that his legs are swollen.

Malik went on to say that anytime he complained about leg pain, the jail officials merely offered him medications. "I'm looking for a long-term solution to my medical issues," Malik said.

Malik's counsel, Kushal Mor, told the court that the minister's Supreme Court petition challenging his unconstitutional detention and seeking immediate release will most likely be heard on April 22. Malik's judicial detention was then extended till April 22 by Special Judge Rokade.

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Malik on February 23 in a money-laundering investigation tied to the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his associates. The NCP leader was detained by the ED until March 7, when he was transferred to court detention for a period of three weeks, which was then extended until April 4. His custody was extended to April 18 on April 4th.
