Nawaz Sharif faces trouble as Pak SC resumes hearing on Panama Papers case

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court concluded its hearing into the Panama Papers case involving the offshore assets of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his children on Friday.

Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan observed that if the matter of Maryam being a beneficial owner [of offshore companies] is considered, then the matter of her being a dependent [of the prime minister] will come to the fore as well.  The date of announcement of the verdict has not been given.

If convicted, Mr. Sharif can face disqualification from politics. The case has dominated headlines in Pakistan for over a year and most government ministers, including the Prime Minister himself and opposition leaders, are only focussing on speaking on this case. Sharif has denied any wrongdoing after the report alleged his family’s vast wealth was beyond their means, and accused his children, including presumed heir Maryam Nawaz, of signing forged documents to obscure ownership of posh London flats.

Prior to the start of Friday's proceedings, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid, one of the three petitioners in the Panama Papers case, addressed the media. He said he expects the case to finish today, adding that “Millions want to be rid of Nawaz Sharif”.
