New Delhi: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Faisal has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a court in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, in a 2009 attempt to murder case. Faizal has been representing the Union Territory in Parliament since 2014. The court canceled the bail of Faizal and three other convicts.

There were a total of 23 accused in this case, out of which 4 were found guilty. Faizal has been found guilty of assaulting his brother-in-law Mohammad Salih. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each of the convicts. On the court's sentencing, Faizal said it was a "politically motivated" case and he would soon file an appeal in the higher court. The charge said Faizal led a group of people who attacked Salih and seriously injured him after an argument over the construction of a shed. Salih was taken to Kerala, where he was hospitalized for months.

Mohammad Salih is the son-in-law of the late former Lok Sabha MP from Lakshadweep and veteran Congress leader PM Sayeed. Sayeed had represented the island 10 times before his death in 2005. According to lawyers, the MP and others attacked Padnath Salih, son-in-law of former Union minister PM Sayeed, when he reached his neighborhood to intervene on a political issue during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
