Nearly 200 National Guard personnel deployed to provide security for the United States President Joe Biden's inauguration in Washington tested positive for coronavirus on Friday.
According to sources, the number of National Guard personnel who tested positive for coronavirus could rise as more than 25,000 troops have been stationed in and around Washington. The tight security arrangement was made after the deadly attack on the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump. The city fences have been topped with razor wire while all checkpoints are being manned by National Guard. In an official statement, the National Guard said it would not discuss corona cases, but personnel were following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, including temperature checks when they left their home state and arrived in the city, along with a screening questionnaire.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden warned on Friday that the number of coronavirus deaths in the United States was expected to surpass 600,000 and urged Congress to move fast on his $1.9 trillion plan to battle corona and provide economic relief to struggling Americans.
