The outrage over the death of a Dalit student after a teacher was beaten up for allegedly touching a water pot continues in Rajasthan. However, amidst all this, senior Congress leader Meira Kumar on Sunday termed the caste system as a disease. In fact, he emphasised the complete abolition of the caste system and adopting a policy of zero tolerance. In a recent interview, the former Union minister also said, "Incidents of caste-based atrocities should not be confused about whose rule it happened or which political party is responsible for it because it diverts attention from the main issue that the caste system should be abolished."

With this, the former Lok Sabha Speaker said 'The caste system has neither weakened nor ended in the last few years.' Meira Kumar's remarks came a few days after a Dalit student Inder Kumar (9) was thrashed by a teacher for allegedly touching a pot of water at a school in Rajasthan's Jalore district on July 20. In fact, in early August, the student died during treatment at a hospital in Ahmedabad. The accused teacher Chhail Singh has been arrested.

In fact, the ruling Congress in Rajasthan is facing criticism over the death of a Dalit student. Not only this, but when asked whether there is any deficiency on the part of the Congress government in the matter of stopping atrocities on Dalits, Meira Kumar said, "Everyone asks me about this. It is not that I am defending or accusing anyone. I just want to say that yes, the political class is responsible to some extent, but this issue is social and politics is a reflection of society.''
