A passenger plane crashed in Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. The plane was descending for landing when it crashed on a football ground nearby. The plane was a 78 seater twin-turbo aircraft.

“The plane “became unstable” while descending and crashed,” an airport official said and added that the plane caught fire immediately after the crash.

The crash happened at around 2:20 PM on Monday when the aircraft was descending to land on the runway but suddenly careened away from the runway and crashed in a football field.

“We cannot give the exact number of casualty as we are still finding out all details. At the moment, our priority is to rush the victims to the hospitals,” said a source from the airport.

The aircraft, operated by US-Bangla Airlines was travelling from Dhaka, Bangladesh to Kathmandu, Nepal. The authorities rescued 17 out of the 67 people travelling in the aircraft. They were rushed to the hospital.

Ambulances and Fire Brigades were rushed to the accident spot. The fire is under control now. According to the airport official, 50 passengers are assumed to be trapped and casualties are expected. A rescue operation is underway.

Following the crash, the airport has been closed and all the scheduled arrivals and departures cancelled. The US-Bangla airlines have not spoken on the incident officially yet. An employee at the office said no one was available to talk on the matter.
