According to a report released to the BBC by the Nepalese government, China is encroaching on the Himalayan nation along the two countries' shared border. According to the BBC report, this is the first time Nepal has made official charges of Chinese influence in its territory. The report was produced last September in response to allegations that China had been intruding in Nepal's far west, in the district of Humla.
The Chinese embassy in Kathmandu denies that any incursion has occurred. The Nepalese government has yet to respond to the BBC's inquiries.
It's unclear why the report hasn't been released yet. However, the Nepalese government has increased ties with China in recent years to offset its long-standing alliance with India, its massive southern neighbour. The conclusions of the report are expected to put a strain on these burgeoning ties with Beijing.
Nepal and China have an approximately 1,400-kilometer border that stretches through the Himalayan highlands. According to the BBC, it was laid down in a series of treaties negotiated between the two countries in the early 1960s.
Much of it is located in isolated, difficult-to-reach locations. The boundary is marked on the ground by a series of pillars spaced km apart.
