KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal on Thursday, August 4, announced its determination to hold the federal and provincial elections on November 20.
A meeting of the Nepal Cabinet took the decision earlier in the day based on the recommendation of the Election Commission (EC). As per the recommendation, the elections are being held on the same days in a bid to make it cost-effective and easier for the poll body to manage.
The coalition government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba has now become a caretaker and is unable to make important decisions as a result of the announcement of the elections.
The Chief Election Commissioner claims that the remaining 107 days are sufficient for the Election Commission to complete its preparations. The government announces election dates after consulting with the Election Commission in accordance with the Election Commission Act of 2017.
Officials from the electoral authority had previously advised holding the election on November 18 with the expectation that the current House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly terms would expire on December 8.
On December 8 under the first-past-the-post method, the Commission announced the early winners of the second phase of the federal and provincial elections.
In 2017, two stages of the preceding federal and provincial elections were held on November 26 and December 7.
