After an emergency meeting of the Nepal Cabinet on Sunday morning Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the country's parliament on the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli following a political stalemate over an executive order issued last week. The Nepal President's Office issued a statement in the afternoon, stated that the House has been dissolved on recommendation of Oli and the council of ministers. It further said the next election will be held in two stages in April-May 2021.
The first phase of polling has been scheduled in April 30 and the second phase on May 10. President dissolved Parliament as per the Article 76, clause 1 and 7, and Article 85 of the Constitution of Nepal, according to the notice issued. The upper house of Nepal is National Assembly and the 275-member House of Representatives, is the lower house of Parliament, whose last election was held in 2017.
The decision to dissolve the Parliament comes as the intra-party feud reached climax in the ruling NCP which has been witnessing months long tussle between two factions, one led by 68-year-old Oli and Party's chairman and another led by 66-year-old Prachanda, also the executive chair of the party and former premier. Oli aide Rajan Bhattarai said the PM has made the decision due to the backlash against him from his party, which had also asked him to consider quitting as its president. The election will be held in 2022 if Oli completes his tenure successfully.
