Nepal protests against China's Belt and Road Initiative due to worries about Beijing's colonialist intentions

Nepal: The National Integration Campaign of Nepal's youth department organized a protest rally to call for the cancellation of the Muslim Commission and China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement, local media reported.

Hundreds of people took part in the rally from Maitighar Mandal of Kathmandu to Naya Baneshwar. According to Kharub, the youth wing of the civil society organization alleged that the Muslim commission supported and propagated "jihadi" ideology, while the BRI agreement was anti-national.

During the protest rally, the protesters raised slogans, among other things, "Cancel the anti-national BRI agreement," "End Chinese expansionism," and "establish Nepal as a Hindu nation".

After reaching Kathmandu, the rally turned into a corner gathering, where campaign chairman Binay Yadav urged the administration to immediately scrap the anti-national BRI accord and Muslim commission that supported jihad.

Representatives of the Central Committee of Ekta Abhiyan including Rajesh Hindu Samrat Chandra Yaduvanshi, Youth Department President Krishna Yadav, spokesperson Rajneesh Pandey, members Preeti Pandey, Muskan Yadav, Bhagya Narayan Thakur, Bodh Narayan Yadav and National Student Council General were present in the rally. Nepal Workers and Peasants Party held a protest meeting earlier this week in New Baneshwar near Parliament House to strongly oppose the recently passed Citizenship Bill.

According to a report in the local media, Nepal Police detained seven protesters protesting the Citizenship Bill and brought them to the police circle in New Baneshwar.

After gathering at Koteshwar, the protesters marched to Min Bhawan, where they held a protest rally in the building's street. Central leaders of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party addressed the gathering.

Parliament is currently debating the Citizenship Bill, which was recently passed by the Government of Nepal.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, which had been up for debate for more than two years after political parties failed to come to an agreement on it, was finally passed by Nepal's parliament on July 14. Nepal Citizenship Act 2063 BS is being amended. The bill, which is up for discussion in the House of Representatives from 2020.

A month after the bill was passed, it was sent to President Vidya Devi Bhandari for assent, but the President sent it back to the House of Representatives for amendment.

In May 2017, Nepal and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative (or BRI) under the direction of Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who was the Prime Minister of Nepal at the time.

The bilateral agreement was thought to accelerate the development of the country's infrastructure. But no concrete project took off. Not a single project has been completed in the five years the BRI was signed. Observers claim that Beijing intends to use Nepal's territory to advance its expansionist goals.

Nepal proposed to build nine different projects as part of the Belt and Road Initiative in early 2019.

Establishment of a technical university in Nepal, extension of 400 kV power transmission line, feasibility study of trans-Himalayan railway connectivity, and construction of new roads, tunnels and hydroelectric dams were some of these.
