A documentary on pop star Britney Spears is getting closer to being released, and it will be available on Netflix. Variety.com says that a teaser trailer for the film 'Britney Vs. Spears' confirms this.

Spears is heard in the 18-second tape leaving a message for an attorney in 2009. A trailer will be released on September 22nd, followed by the documentary on September 28th, just in time for Spears' next court hearing on September 29th.

Erin Lee Carr is directing the film, which has been in the works for over a year. According to reports, the documentary would focus on Spears' unique conservatorship and will involve important individuals in her orbit. Given how carefully she has been guarded from media chances throughout her conservatorship, it is uncertain whether Spears herself will feature in the movie.

Jamie Spears, Spears' father, requested a judge to end her 13-year conservatorship earlier this month. "If Ms. Spears wishes to terminate the conservatorship and feels that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should receive that chance," an attorney said in the motion.

The Netflix documentary follows Hulu's "Framing Britney Spears," which was released as part of "The New York Times Presents" series in conjunction with FX. It focused partly on the #FreeBritney fan movement that has said, for years, that the singer is being held under a conservatorship against her will caused an uproar on social media and a catapulted interest into Spears' unusual 13-year conservatorship.

Spears' situation has been catapulted into the forefront of the international news cycle with the release of the New York Times documentary, with Spears delivering her own evidence for the first time ever on June 23, during her first public court appearance at the Los Angeles Superior Courthouse.

Spears' legal struggle has continued with unrelenting support from Hollywood and fans across the world, not to mention increased media attention and fan inquiries into each and every legal file, since the hearing in which she branded her conservatorship "abusive."

Carr, the daughter of the late David Carr, the noted journalist and author, is best known for exploring criminal justice in her projects, which include Netflix's 'How to Fix a Drug Scandal' and 'I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter' for HBO.
