New Specified Health Warning on Tobacco Products packs issued

By amending the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules, 2008, the Central government announced new sets of specific health warnings for all tobacco product packets on Friday. 

The amended regulations will take effect on December 1, 2022. "By amending the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules, 2008, and naming them "The Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Third Amendment Rules, 2022," the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has announced new sets of specific health warnings for all tobacco product packs. The revised Rules will take effect on December 1, 2022 "read the official release.

All tobacco products created, imported, or packaged on or after December 1, 2022 must bear the government-supplied images and the text "TOBACCO CAUSES PAINFUL DEATH"; tobacco products created, imported, or packaged on or after December 1, 2023 must bear Image 2 and the text "TOBACCO USERS DIE YOUNGER". Any individual involved directly or indirectly in the production, supply, importation, or distribution of cigarettes or any other tobacco products must make sure that every package of tobacco products bears the required health warnings.

According to Section 20 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, violating the aforementioned clause is a crime punishable by jail or a fine. The current defined health warning will remain in effect until November 30, 2022, according to government statistics, as announced in GSR 458(E) of July 21, 2020.
