Tehran: The European Union's executive arm proposed new sanctions on Russia on Wednesday, targeting Iran's drone manufacturers in response to the conflict in Ukraine.
Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, expressed hope that the EU's 27 member states would agree to the new package as part of a joint battery of G7 sanctions on the one-year anniversary of the invasion on February 24.
"We are targeting many industrial goods that Russia requires but cannot obtain through backfilling from third countries," she said, citing "vital goods such as electronics, specialised vehicles, machine parts, truck and jet engine spare parts."
She stated that Brussels desired export controls on 47 more electronic components "that can be used in Russian weapons systems such as drones, missiles, and helicopters."
The new sanctions will also target Iranian manufacturers who have supplied Russia with drones used to attack Ukraine's infrastructure.
"Iran's Revolutionary Guards have supplied Russia with Shahed drones," von der Leyen stated.

"As a result, we are now including seven Iranian entities in our dual use regime. "They are now completely prohibited from selling sensitive items to Russia," she explained.
Since Moscow launched its assault on Ukraine last February, the EU has imposed nine waves of unprecedented sanctions on it. These have targeted key Russian exports such as oil in an effort to reduce Russian President Vladimir Putin's war chest.

However, EU diplomats admit that they are running out of new areas to target with each new round of measures. According to EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell, the new sanctions will also include the addition of nearly 100 more individuals and entities to an asset freeze and visa ban blacklist.
"These include those in charge of military operations, political decisions, propaganda, and disinformation," he explained. We are after those who are involved in human kidnappings, deportations, and forced adoptions of Ukrainian children to Russia, as well as those who facilitate the looting of Ukrainian resources."
