NEW YORK: The state of New York is considering removing the requirement for indoor businesses to wear masks or be vaccinated.  As daily new Covid-19 cases have dropped recently, New York has followed New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Oregon, and California in relaxing the requirement for masks or proof of immunisation in indoor settings.

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York stated on Wednesday that the statewide indoor business mask-or-vaccine requirement will be withdrawn on Thursday, and that enforcement will be left to businesses, local governments, and counties.

As a result of the Omicron variant causing a spike in cases in the state, the mask-or-vaccine procedure was introduced on December 10 and was prolonged through Thursday.

This temporary measure is no longer needed statewide, according to Hochul, as case counts have plummeted and hospitalizations have significantly decreased.

In certain high-density situations, such as hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, transportation, and other connected institutions, mask restrictions will remain in force.  "While we're making progress, this pandemic is far from done," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated.

According to Hochul, the school mask requirement would be reevaluated in early March based on public health data. Representatives from the business community in New York state were pleased to hear the news.
