IPL 13 is scheduled to begin on 19 September. Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum recently said that "New Zealand was lucky to have managed to reach the final of the 2019 World Cup, but now it is time for them to achieve something special". McCullum, the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), talked about this in a podcast. He said, "I know that they came very close to becoming the World Champion last year, but I felt that were a bit lucky to be able to reach that position".

In July last year, New Zealand had lost to England even after the super-exciting tie of the World Cup final. Now about this, he said, "I think they are really close to doing something special. There is no reason not to do well under the guidance of the captaincy of Kane Williamson and some other senior players". Apart from this, McCullum, who led New Zealand to the final of the World Cup in 2015 under his captaincy, said, "I think the time has come when they will have to draw a streak on the sand. I think Kane has done well, Kane has a good understanding not only of New Zealand but of world cricket".

McCullum said, "Williamson leads the team brilliantly. I think he also has confidence. Earlier we kept thinking that like big countries we do not have resources". India is going to host two World Cups in the next three years. This includes the T20 World Cup in the year 2021 and the ODI World Cup in the year 2023. The T20 World Cup to be played in Australia this year has been postponed for the year 2022.
