Hong Kong : The oath-taking ceremony for 90 members of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's (HKSAR) Legislative Council (LegCo) began at 11:00 a.m. local time Monday. The democratic features of Hong Kong's electoral system were undermined by the election.

The ceremony took place in the LegCo Complex's Chamber. After jointly singing the national song of China with HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam, the oath administrator, the parliamentarians began to take an oath to obey the Basic Law of the HKSAR and swear allegiance to the HKSAR one by one, according to reports.

The Chinese government's demolition of Hong Kong's democracy, freedoms, and autonomy reached a new low point with this year's Legislative Council elections. The elections were the first since the 'patriot' electoral reform law was implemented, which reduced the number of directly contested seats and required candidates to be screened by government authorities. Furthermore, pro-government candidates stormed into the expanded legislature in Hong Kong's "patriots only" elections, which saw a record low voter turnout.

According to the Hong Kong Free Press, almost 1.3 million people cast ballots, resulting in a voter turnout of 30.2%, 5.6 percentage points lower than the previous low in the 1995 legislative election under British colonial authority. In an election where pro-democracy candidates are mainly absent, observers believe turnout to be a measure of legitimacy.
