Amid lockdown, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) set a new record by constructing 3,979 km of national highways during the financial year 2019-20. This news is relieving amidst corona infection. In the last financial year i.e. 2018-19, NHAI constructed 3,380 km of national highways.

For your information, let us tell you that NHAI was established in 1995. To speed up road construction, the central government has run many projects in the country. Among them, the latest project is Bharatmala, under which a total of about 65 thousand kilometers of national highways is to be built at a cost of seven and a half lakh crore rupees. Under the first phase of Bharatmala, the government has already approved the construction of 34 thousand kilometers of national highways in five years.

Out of which the responsibility for the construction of 27,500 km of national highways has been entrusted to NHAI. Meanwhile, to speed up highway construction, the NHAI management has taken several steps to pursue stalled projects and complete new projects on time.
