Kochi: The National Investigation Agency in Kerala's gold smuggling case has extended the scope of its investigation to Tamil Nadu. Police sources in Tamil Nadu have confirmed that the NIA team led by a DIG level officer is making inquiries about this in Chennai. However, sources refused to give more information about this.

The NIA has said in the past that even before the accused were charged in this case, they had brought gold in large quantities from abroad through various airports and ports of India. In its report filed in the special NIA court last week, the agency said that the initial investigation of this case points to a big conspiracy, which includes highly influential people from India and abroad. It was also discovered in the investigation that the accused have earned a lot of profit from illegal business and it can be used for terrorist funding.

Let us tell you that the two main accused in this case, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair, were sent to jail on Saturday by the Judicial Arrest by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (Economic Offenses). Both were in the custody of the customs department for 5 days. Earlier both were in the custody of the NIA who arrested them from Bengaluru on 11 July. The opposition Congress has surrounded the CM in this case. Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala has sent a question paper to the CM in which several questions have been raised including his secretary M. Shivshankar and his failure to trace the relationship between the gold smuggling group.
