Nicobar Islands region shake by 6.0 magnitude earthquake

Andaman and Nicobar: Nicobar Island shattered by an earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, on Thursday morning at 8.43 am.

As per the report of India Meteorological Department report, records are:

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.0,              

 Occurred on: 17-01-2019, 08:23:07 IST,

 Lat: 7.6 N & Long: 94.5 E,

Depth: 84 Km,

Region: Nicobar Islands Region,”

Last year in September 2018, Assam region was devasted by an earthquake, that was recorded  5.5 on Richter Scale.

The Nicobar Islands are an archipelagic island chain in the eastern Indian Ocean. Located 1,300 km southeast of the Indian subcontinent, one of the seven union territories of India, are a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Andaman and Nicobar made up of more than 500 mostly uninhabited islands. A Reuters witness at Port Blair, the capital, said the earthquake was not felt there.

In December 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a two-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, renamed three of the islands as a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The Ross Island was renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep; the Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep; and the Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep. The PM made this announcement during a speech at the Netaji Stadium, marking the 75th anniversary of the hoisting of the Indian flag by Bose there

For the Nicobar Islands, no tsunami warning and no casualties or injuries have been reported till now. There have been no reports of aftershock either.
