NAIROBI – The Kenyan government has imposed a month-long night curfew and security operations in Marsabit County, in the country's northwestern region, to boost security disarmament efforts in the face of escalating unrest.

The  Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i also stated the dusk to dawn curfew will cover Komu Sub County in neighbouring Isiolo County and the Sololo district near the Kenya-Ethiopia border. "We've detected a link between the growth of guns in Marsabit and the instability in Komu, where illegal mining activities are taking place," he told journalists in Nairobi, Kenya's capital.

The curfew, which will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for 30 days with the option of an extension, will be implemented in concert with a disarmament exercise aimed at illegal guns and ammunition,  said Matiang'i.

The government has mobilised enough personnel for the operation in the last week, according to the official, and they are already on the ground. Matiang'i said the operation could be continued until the illicit weapons wreaking havoc are removed, and he blamed the insecurity in the area on some leaders arming their clan militias.

Special forces are among those on the ground, according to him, to carry out the operation, which will also affect Komu sub-county, Merti in Isiolo, and areas of Sololo along the border.
