New Delhi: ISRO's mission Chandrayaan-2's contact with the lander Vikram ended with nightfall on the moon. Vikram's life span was 14 days. Today, on Saturday, the night will start on the moon and Vikram will stop getting sunlight at night. One lunar day on the moon is equal to 14 days on Earth. On September 7, ISRO lost contact with Lander Vikram with the ground station, at that time it was just 2 km away from the lunar surface.

The lander Vikram was designed to do a soft-landing on the lunar surface. ISRO has said that once it is night on the moon, the lander will not have sunlight to generate electricity for his work. ISRO said that during this time the moon would be extremely cold and Vikram was not designed to work in heavy cold temperatures.

Earlier on Thursday, ISRO had said that a national-level committee comprising academics and ISRO experts was studying the reason for communication breakdown with Chandrayaan-2 lander. On September 8, ISRO said that the location of Lander Vikram has been detected in the on-board camera of Chandrayaan-2 orbiter. ISRO had said that 90 to 95% of the objectives of the Chandrayaan-2 mission have been completed so far and this lunar science will continue to contribute.
