Nipah virus Kerala: Centre suggests measures, HM issues management plan

NEW DELHI: The Central government on Monday recommended various action plans to be adopted by the Kerala government to tackle the Nipah virus outbreak in the state, based on the first report submitted by a central team.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed that of the total 251 persons, who came in contact with the 12-year-old boy, who succumbed to the Nipah virus, have shown symptoms of the infection. 38 people who came in contact with the deceased have been kept in isolation at the Calicut Medical College hospital. The Health minister informed that all the contacts were identified following strict protocol and special teams have been formed to collect every single detail from all the houses in the containment zone.  The Health Secretary has also asked the state government to issue alerts in nearby districts of Kannur, Malappuram, and Wayanad.

Further, In a letter to state Chief Secretary VP Joy, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that an active search for cases needs to be undertaken in the containment area as per the micro plan provided by the central team."Both hospital-based and community-based surveillance needs to be strengthened. Awareness needs to be created among the field formations for early detection of cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome/Respiratory Distress and risk communicated to the public," he said.
