New Delhi: The detention of fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi, who escaped after crores of bank scam, has been extended till August 27. Nirav, accused in the two-billion-dollar Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam and money laundering case, was presented before a UK court through video conference.

Since the arrest in March last year, 49-year-old Nirav Modi has been imprisoned in Wandsworth Jail in South West London. He was presented in a video conference in front of District Judge Vanessa Beretser at Westminster Magistrate's Court in London. He was told that the hearing to be held before the five-day hearing commencing on September 7 would be a case management hearing. Justice Beretsar said, "You will appear again through video conference. Your lawyers can be present in the court."

The first phase of hearing of Nirav Modi's extradition case was heard by District Judge Samuel Gooji in May and the second phase is to be heard between 7 to 11 September. The hearing to be held next month will conclude the debate to decide prima facie case against Modi and Indian officials will request extradition for the second time, which was approved by UK Home Minister Preeti Patel earlier this year.
