Asha Devi, mother of 2012 December gangrape victim Nirbhaya, has condemned the remark made by former Karnataka Director General of Police HT Sangliana on Friday.

“It would have been better if he had spoken about our struggle than making a personal remark. It shows that people's mentalities in our society has not changed,” said Asha Devi to ANI.

HT Sangliana had invited controversy after he made a remark on Asha Devi at an event organised on March 8 this year to commemorate International Women’s Day. While speaking at the event named in memory of Nirbhaya, where women achievers are felicitated, Sangliana said that Asha Devi had ‘good physique’.

“When I look at her (Devi), her physique is very very nice, and how beautiful Nirbhaya could have been if her mother is so well-made by God,” he added.

He made matters worse when he said that a victim should surrender to rapists.

“If you are overpowered, you should surrender, and follow up the case later. That way we can be safe, save life, prevent being killed,” said Sangliana.

Following the statements, former top cop was criticised widely for his insensitive comments.
