NEW DELHI:  Known for her love for Indian textiles, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reached in Parliament for the Union Budget presentation wearing a traditional temple border saree on Wednesday.

Nirmala Sitharaman  has been actively promoting traditional handlooms especially after she took charge as the Finance Minister in 2019. Her sartorial choice from the ongoing and previous budget sessions proves that she is a staunch supporter of handwoven fabrics.

With a red digital tablet in hand, Sitharaman looked classic and elegant.

She posed for pictures in front of the Ministry of Finance's Central Secretariat on Wednesday morning. She looked sophisticated and classy. A little bindi and gold bangles were the finishing touches to her understated appearance.

For her first Budget presentation in 2019, Sitharaman opted for a straightforward pink Mangalgiri saree with a gold border. By forgoing the colonial custom of bringing ledger documents in a suitcase, she attracted attention. She carried the budget papers in a conventional bag called a "bahi khata."

Sitharaman chose a vivid yellow-gold silk saree for 2020. The colour yellow has important meaning. It is thought to be a sacred colour that symbolises abundance.
