Six district hospitals in Uttar Pradesh have been named top performers by the Niti Aayog. This was done as part of a study for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The Niti Aayog evaluated the performance of approximately 700 government hospitals in India based on ten framework indicators. The hospitals were evaluated in three domains: structure, processes, and output/outcomes. According to a government spokeswoman, the rankings revealed that four institutions were found to be the top in the OPD consultations category, including Balrampur Hospital in Lucknow.

In the surgical productivity index, the Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital, Prayagraj, has been ranked best in the country. Other Uttar Pradesh hospitals in the list included Malkhan Singh District hospital Aligarh, RNM district hospital Firozabad, district women hospital Mau and combined district hospital in Kannauj which got the top slot in 'ratio of paramedical staff in a position to IPHS Norms'.

"Despite large funding allocation for district hospitals, as well as their essential role in healthcare service, there is no comprehensive method to assess their performance based on their results," according to the exercise's background paper, "The Health of Hospital." It also revealed that after consulting with the states, a list of indicators and their weighting was compiled.

Hospitals were ranked using data from the Hospital Management Information System. According to health officials, Niti Aayog has requested a background note of the top hospitals in a pre-determined format for the rankings to be released in an official report that would serve as a pattern for replication.
