New Delhi: Between 2015 and 2019, more than 6.76 lakh people left Indian citizenship and took citizenship of other countries. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai has given this information in the lower house of Parliament on Tuesday. Rai has given this information while giving a written answer to a question in the Lok Sabha.

He said that a total of 1,24,99,395 Indian citizens are living in other countries. Nityanand Rai said that between 2015 and 2019, more than 6.76 lakh people have left Indian citizenship. Talking about the last four years, 1.36 lakh in the year 2019, 1.25 lakh in the year 2018, 1.28 lakh in the year 2017, and about 1.45 lakh people in both the years 2015 and 2016, gave up citizenship of India. The government said that out of 1.24 crore Indians living abroad, there is 37 lakh OCI cardholders.

There are a total of 93,032 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in states like Tamil Nadu and Odisha in India. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha that 58,843 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees are living in 108 camps in Tamil Nadu, while 34,135 are living as non-camp refugees, but have registered with the local police.
