Washington: The 75-year-old Nobel Prize-winning Roman bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo has been accused of sexual abuse, and now the Vatican will investigate it. A Dutch magazine has published a report about his sex scandal. According to the report, this incident took place when Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo was in the post of bishop in the Southeast Asian country of East Timor. The bishop has been accused of sexually abusing several boys in Dilly in the 1980s and 90s. Belo was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1996.

The magazine also published the statements of some victims in its report, who have reported that Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo sexually abused them and also gave them money in return. The victims were teenagers at the time of the incident and came from extremely poor families. The victims said that they were also afraid to talk about this. Because this Catholic Church of East Timur is highly respected by the people there. When the magazine 'De Groene Amsterdammer' called Bishop Belo to talk about this, he disconnected the phone.

 

According to the report, one of the victims has said that he demands an apology from the church and Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo over the incident. He said that he wants this incident to come in front of the world and no one should do such sexual violence under power. The victim said that the church and the accused should at least express regret over what has passed on to the victims. At the same time, a 42-year-old victim has told that at that time the bishop stripped him and had oral sex with him. After the events came to light, a Vatican spokesman assured to look into the matter.

While awarding the Nobel to Bishop Belo, it was said that he campaigned against Indonesia's 24-year occupation of his homeland East Timor in a non-violent manner. Along with him, the award was also given to Jose Ramos Horta, who is currently the President of East Timur and lives in Portugal. East Timor used to be under Indonesia from 1975-99 and in the meantime, there was a huge massacre.
