Seoul: Based to state media, North Korea on Friday criticised a US arms donation to Taiwan and charged that the US was to blame for raising tensions to "another ignition point of war."

On Friday, as part of the 2023 budget, Congress approved up to $1 billion in weapons purchases for the island, and the United States unveiled a $345 million aid package for Taiwan.

Maeng Yong Rim, director general of the North Korean foreign ministry's Chinese affairs division, called the plan a "dangerous political and military provocation" and a "flagrant violation" of the One China principle in a statement published by the official KCNA news agency.

Beijing has repeatedly forbade any "official exchanges" between Washington and Taipei and asserts sovereignty over the democratically run island. Taiwan denies China's claims to sovereignty and asserts that only the people of Taiwan have the power to determine their future.

The statement declared that "the Asia-Pacific region, including the Korean peninsula and the Taiwan Strait, is neither a theatre of US military activity nor a test site of war," warning that the US will "pay a high price" for "provoking the core interest of China."

Last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with a Chinese delegation in Pyongyang and promised to elevate bilateral ties to a "new high." They examined Kim's most recent nuclear-capable missiles and attack drones at a military parade before the meeting.

According to Taiwan's defence ministry, China's military has recently launched dozens of fighters, bombers, and other aircraft, including drones, into the skies to Taiwan's south.
