Recently a North Korean freight train crossed the Yalu River railroad crossing into China on Sunday, raising the chance of the two countries restarting land transactions after a year-long halt because to the Covid-19 epidemic.

The train from Sinuiju landed at Dandong, China's border city, at roughly 9.10 a.m., according to sources, however it was unclear if it was carrying freight or was empty. According to a source, it is expected to return to North Korea on Monday with "essential items" loaded.

It is the first time in one and a half years that the North has publicly opened its land border with China. Since the Covid-19 outbreak, it has closed its borders, halting all foreign travel programmes and the operation of cross-border passenger trains.

"It means that the material exchange (between North Korea and China) has formally begun in force," a government source said, adding that medical supplies and basic essentials shipments will most certainly restart.
