Mumbai: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar has written a letter to the DGP directing him to ensure that cows are not slaughtered on July 10, the day of Bakrid. Let us tell you that recently Rahul Narvekar has become the Assembly Speaker in the Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis government.

Cow slaughter is a crime in Maharashtra. It was banned by the BJP-Shiv Sena government. Those selling and possessing beef can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to Rs 10,000. However, calves and cows can be slaughtered by obtaining a certificate of 'fit to slaughter' from the local administration.

Earlier, Lok Sabha MP and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal urged the Muslims of Assam to respect the sentiments of Hindus. He has appealed not to sacrifice cows in the wake of Eid-ul-Azha. It may be noted that Ajmal is also the chairman of the Assam State Jamiat Ulama (ASJU), the top body of the leading organisations of Islamic scholars belonging to the Deobandi School of Think. Earlier, the Uttarakhand High Court had lifted the ban on abattoirs imposed by the Pushkar Singh Dhami government in the Haridwar district. A petition was filed in the High Court against the complete closure of the slaughterhouses. Hearing a petition, the Uttarakhand High Court today allowed the Muslim community to sacrifice on Eid in the Mangalore area of the Haridwar district.
