Djokovic rises to top ATP rankings after securing Australian Open title

Along with winning the men's singles title of Australia Open, Serbia tennis player Novak Djokovic once again surpassed Rafael Nadal in the new ATP rankings released on Monday. In the first Grand Slam final of the year, second seed Djokovic came back strongly after trailing 1-2. He defeated fifth seed Dominique Thiem of Austria 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a five-set match that lasted almost four hours. Djokovic will start his 276th week at the top of the rankings with his 17th Grand Slam title.

Nadal achieved the first position by defeating Djokovic on November 4 last year. He is not far behind the record of 310 weeks at the top of Switzerland veteran Roger Federer. If he stays in the rankings till October 5, he will break Federer's record. Federer remains third in the rankings with 7130 points. Djokovic, who won all 13 of his matches this year, has 9720 points, while Nadal, who lost to Thiem in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, has 9395 rating points.

Thiem has also gained in the rankings, improving one place to reach fourth place with 7045 rating points, while Russia's Danil Medvadev slipped from fourth to fifth in the Australian Open pre-quarterfinals. In this match, Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka, who defeated Medvedev, gained two places and reached the 13th position.
