HYDERABAD: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification for renewal of registration certificates of old vehicles as part of the Centre's new vehicle junk policy. The new rules will come into effect from April 1, 2022. After the implementation of the new policy, two wheeler owners who want to continue using their vehicles after 15 years will now have to pay Rs 7000 to 10,000.

At present, re-registration of a two wheeler will cost around Rs 850 and if there is a delay and an additional amount of Rs 300 is charged as fine. But after the implementation of the new policy, two-wheeler owners will have to spend around Rs 7,000 annually to get the vehicle on the road. In case of four wheelers, the current registration cost is Rs 1,200 and there is a fine of Rs 500 per day for delay in new registration. Under the new rule, the vehicle owner will have to pay around Rs 10,000 per year to reuse the old vehicle. Apart from this, they will have to pay green tax of Rs 285 for two wheeler and Rs 500 for four wheeler.

According to transport department sources, Hyderabad has over 1.25 crore vehicles, most of which are two-wheelers which are more than 15 years old. A senior official said there are over 13 lakh vehicles, which are 20 years old and 14 lakh vehicles, which are 15 years old (which fall under the category of commercial vehicles).
