New Delhi: The Food and Drug Administration of the US has given permission for the emergency use of a corona-detecting device from a breath sample. This is the first device to detect corona from a sample of breath. The InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer can be used for corona testing in places such as clinics, hospitals and mobile sites. With this, the test report comes within 3 minutes. However, it will be used only under the supervision of a licensed health care provider.
Jeff Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Device and Radiological Health, has described this device as another example of rapid innovation on corona testing (Covid-19 testing). He said that this can greatly facilitate Covid-19 testing. On Thursday, the FDA said that the device was 91.2 percent accurate in identifying positive test samples and 99.3 percent accurate in identifying negative test samples.
The agency also said that it is expected that InspectorIR will produce around 100 instruments per week, which can be used to test about 160 samples per day. This stage of production of the equipment will enable testing capacity of approximately 64,000 samples per month using the InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer.
