New Delhi: Justice Indira Banerjee, the fifth senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, retired on Friday after holding office for over four years. She has expressed hope that more women will be appointed as judges in the Supreme Court in the coming days. Justice Banerjee has said that she feels free again because a judge's life is full of sacrifice. She has to give up many things in her life.

Justice Indira Banerjee has accepted that entry into the legal profession was a coincidence. She said, 'If my father was alive, I would hardly have accepted to be a judge. He often used to tell me to become a judge, but I used to refuse him every time.' Let us tell you that Justice Banerjee was the 8th woman judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Now with her retirement, the strength of women judges in the Supreme Court will be reduced to three at present. These include Justice Hima Kohli, Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Bela M Trivedi.

The apex court, which came into existence on January 26, 1950, has appointed only 11 women judges in the last 72 years. Justice M Fathima Beevi was appointed as the first woman judge in 1989. The other women judges appointed to the apex court were Justices Sujata V Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra, Ranjana P Desai, R Banumathi and Indu Malhotra.
