Senior Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has slammed the Congress leadership for their poor performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and has hinted at switching allegiances to the Bharatiya Janata Party soon.

Speaking at a press conference after the election results came out, Patil said that he will speak to his supporters and decide about joining the BJP in a week.

“With the poor performance of the Congress in Maharashtra, the stage is set for more defections from the party towards BJP and Shiv Sena. The infighting in the party is being cited as one of the major reasons for the defeat of the party along with a lack of funds. With the top leadership of the party decimated and a Shiv Sena import being the only face to win, questions are being raised on the entire leadership structure and whether the party needs a complete overhaul,” he told reporters.

However, he also said that the upcoming assembly elections could prove as a big motivating factor for leaders of the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party to defect to the BJP and Sena who have performed remarkably well in the Lok Sabha elections.

“Congress leaders are only responsible for the poor performance,” he said.

Patil has also spoken to Shiv Sena. He could be joining either of the two parties depending on who will provide him with the seat that he wishes to contest for the Maharashtra assembly elections later this year. Vikhe Patil’s son, Sujay Vikhe Patil, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party earlier this year and contested the parliamentary elections from Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat, winning it by a margin of close to 3 lakh votes.
