The government has studied 931 cases of fake refund claims after studying GST data. According to sources in the Finance Ministry, 27,000 taxpayers have filed refund claims worth Rs 28,000 crore in the account of the inverted duty structure in the current financial year. That was revealed in the weekly review chaired by Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey on Monday. Sources said that data analytics is studying all the refunds given since the year 2017 in fraud cases of the input tax credit.

As of November last year, 6,641 cases of fake refunds were registered in which 7,164 taxpayers were present. Rs 1,057 crore has been recovered from them. The highest number of cases of fake refunds or frauds have been seen in the Kolkata zone. It is followed by Delhi, Jaipur, and Panchkula. The same sources said that investigators in Delhi have exposed several cases of fraud through data analytics. In such cases, it has been seen that a network of 500 companies has been created under this, including fake bill makers, intermediary dealers, distributors and even bogus manufacturers of aerials.
