Chennai: A staff nurse who was delivering the baby of a 26-year-old woman at an Additional Primary Health Centre in Koovathur, Kancheepuram district, removed the head of the baby leaving the torso inside the womb. Doctors said the baby had died in the mother’s womb and its head got separated during vaginal delivery. An unidentified relative of the woman said that staff nurses at the health care center ignored her pleas for pain relief medication and went ahead with vaginal delivery.

The woman was later shifted to the Government Chengalpet Medical College Hospital where doctors administered drugs to expel the torso of the baby on Wednesday. The woman is said to be stable. The woman’s relatives said the nurses removed only the baby’s head from the mother’s womb, leaving the torso inside. The woman was then rushed to the Chengalpattu Government Medical College in Kancheepuram for an emergency surgery, where doctors extracted the torso.

Tamil Nadu Deputy Director of Public Health Dr. Sethil Kumar said, “Preliminary investigations are underway, We are trying to find out the reason behind this [decapitation]. The baby had to be removed to save the life of a woman. Since the baby weighed just 1.5 kilograms, they decided that vaginal labor would not be a hazard. But during vaginal delivery, the head got separated.” A few months ago in Rajasthan, a nurse separated the body of a baby from its head, leaving the head inside the mother's womb.
