BOUDH: Based on reliable info, a team from the Special Task Force (STF) launched a raid on March 22 evening near the Boudh Bypass Road PS with the help of forest officials from the Boudh Forest Division.
Two wildlife criminals, Uchhab Kanhar S/o. Bighna Kanhar of Jamukhol, Tikripada, and Dhadalapada PO: Baghiapada, provided the STF with information about the sale and possession of wildlife products by wildlife criminals. Prasant Kumar Behera, son of Ugrasen Behera, of Jamukhol, Tikripada, and Dhadalapada PO: Baghiapada, and PS. Boudh in the Boudh District PS. The Boudh Dist Boudh were caught.
During the search, two live pangolins, weighing 13 kg and 10 kg, respectively, were found in their possession along with other potentially damaging items. The accused individuals were detained for possessing such live pangolins, but they were unable to offer any documentation to corroborate their claim.
In this regard, an STF PS Case under Section 51 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, has been filed, and the defendants will be brought before the SDJM Court in Boudh. Moreover, DFO Boudh received the Live Pangolins for safekeeping.
The Indian pangolin (Maniscrassicaudata), also known as the thick-tailed pangolin, the scaly anteater, and bajrakapta in Odia, is a nocturnal mammal that lives alone and is reclusive and slow-moving. According to the Wild Life Protection Act of 1972, it is a schedule-I protected animal. Absolute protection is provided under Schedule I, and the harshest penalties are listed for offences committed there.
A special investigation is being conducted against wildlife offenders and poachers, and more work is being done in this area.
