Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to stop the construction of the Polavaram project immediately. The decision could be a major setback for the Andhra Pradesh government.
Last week, the central government approved some issues related to the Polavaram project. The Odisha CM has made a request to PM Modi on the 1st of June. In his letter, Naveen Patnaik mentioned that the project would permanently hurt Odisha and consequently submerge tribal villages of Malkangiri district and flood fertile agricultural land and large number of forest areas.

The CM of Odisha opposed the design of the project and said that a hearing on the project has not been held in Odisha till date. He urged Modi to seek the opinion of the primitive people, who are likely to be seriously affected. The Polavaram Godavari project will irrigate three lakh hectares of land in Andhra and generate 960MW of hydropower. The Government of Andhra Pradesh has not yet responded to the letter of the CM of Odisha.
