Odisha: Father-son beaten to death over suspicions of practicing witchcraft

A duo of 55-year-old man and his 22-year-old son was thrashed to death by mob. The incident took place as villagers suspected father-son practising witchcraft in the tribal-dominated Gajapati district of Odisha.

According to police officials the incident occurred on Saturday night. Police in Gajapti, identified the duo namely Luka Dalabehera and his son Anak Dalabehera of Muthaguda village. They under the jurisdiction of Adaba police station were called out from their home on Saturday evening by a few villagers. Over the questioning about the incident, sub-divisional police officer of R Udaygiri, Dilip Kumar Nayak stated “The father-son was called to a nearby forest where the villagers held a meeting before thrashing them to death. A child had died in the village a month ago and villagers suspected that the father-son duo’s witchcraft led to his death.” 55-year-old died in the forest, while a badly injured Anak managed to escape from the spot and returned home. Later, he too succumbed at home because of several injuries. The local sarpanch reported the incident to the Adaba police.

Meanwhile, talking to Luka’s daughter Ludhia confronted that “My father and brother were killed on baseless suspicions of sorcery. The police should arrest the culprits immediately and punish them.” Now, police has detained some villagers over their alleged involvement in the murder.
