PURI: Thousands of pilgrims from around the country gathered in Puri on Monday for the 'Snana Ustav.'

Devotees had come from all across the country to witness Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath's ceremonial bathing ceremony, known as 'Snana Ustav.' Since devotees were not allowed to see the Lords' Snana Purnima ceremonies for the past two years, elaborate security arrangements have been undertaken for the special occasion, which is expected to draw lakhs of visitors, according to IG (central range) Narasingha Bhol.

As they sung religious songs and chanted mantras, the devotees displayed even more zeal. A few ecstatic tourists were seen dancing as well.

Snana Utsav is a special bath of Lord Jagannath held on the Purnima of the Jyestha month (Devasnan Purnima) to commemorate Lord Jagannath's debut day.  To ensure the smooth performance of the Snan Purnima ceremonies, Odisha police have constructed a five-layer security cover in and around the Sri Jagannath temple in Puri. During the Snan Purnima, security arrangements have been prepared for hassle-free darshan of devotees, smooth traffic regulation, pilgrim facilitation, and visitor safety at the sea beach and other significant sites, according to police authorities. In addition, limits on vehicle mobility in the municipality have been enforced for Tuesday.

Lord Jagannath and his divine siblings underwent 'Senapata Lagi' (special preparation to leave the sanctum sanctorum) performed by servitors early on Monday morning as part of the preparations for the Snana Ustav or Deva Snan Purnima, when the main idols of the 12th century shrine are poured sacred water in front of people. Daitapati servitors apply a paste prepared from Baula Katha (a piece of Baula tree wood) to the deities during the rite, which takes place a day before Snana Jatra.
