New Delhi: Health minister in the Odisha cabinet under Naveen Patnaik,  and Senior Biju Janata Dal leader, Naba Kisore Das, died after having been shot by a police officer on Sunday, January 29.

Assistant sub-inspector Gopal Das reportedly  opened fire at Das while he was at Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda district. ASI Das was posted at the Gandhi Chowk police outpost in the town. Videos have been circulated showing aides rushing a severely injured Das into a vehicle. He succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

Top Polices at Bhubaneswar said the motive behind the murder was unclear and is still being investigated. The Hindu has reported that ASI Das had earlier served the minister as his personal security officer.

The incident occurred near Gandhi Chhak of Brajarajnagar in Jharsuguda as Das was on the way to attend a function. ASI Gopal Das, who was in his uniform, suddenly came near the minister's vehicle and opened fire at him with his service revolver, said Brajarajnagar sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Gupteswar Bhoi. yet to be ascertained. The minister fell unconscious at the spot. In such critical condition, he was first admitted to a local hospital. Then, he was airlifted to Bhubaneswar and admitted to the Apollo Hospital.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has expressed deep shock and distress over the Minister's death. In a statement, he said: "I am shocked and distressed over the very unfortunate demise of Minister Naba Das. The doctors made every possible effort to save his life. But unfortunately, he could not recover."
