BHUBANESWAR:: The Odisha police have detained a Nigerian man from New Delhi for allegedly cheating a Balasore man of Rs30 lakh by honey-trapping him, police officials said on Thursday.

The accused identified as Samson Emeke Alika has been arrested based on a case registered at cyber and economic offence police station, Balasore. Alika was staying in a rented accommodation in the national capital.

On April 13, 2022, a man filed a complaint with the cyber police about honey-trapping and fraudulent activities. According to the complaint, the Nigerian man came to contact the victim on Facebook and introduced himself as a young woman from London. They later exchanged texts via WhatsApp, according to Meena Bindhani, the police station's inspector-in-charge (IIC).

The woman then informed the victim that she had sent him expensive gifts like as gold biscuits, a Rolex watch, and an iPhone, according to Meena. She said, one day, a man identifying himself as a customs official from New Delhi called the victim and urged him to pay customs duties in order to collect the gifts.

Accordingly, the victim kept on spending lakhs of rupees to receive the gifts. He has transferred about Rs 30 lakh but did not get the gifts. Later, he realised that he was trapped and cheated by cyber frauds, said the police inspector.

The police said they have seized two mobile phones, one laptop, VISA from the arrested Nigerian man. The VISA of the accused has already been expired in 2018 while it seems that his passport is also not a real one. Further investigation into the case is on to nab other people involved in the case.
